Downsizing and layoffs have become a fact of life for many companies across the U.S. over the last couple of years. This doesn’t mean the “survival” trend will continue indefinitely. One of the sure signs of recovery for an individual organization is the resumption of hiring. The next step toward actually thriving occurs when the workforce begins expanding due to the creation of new positions and opportunities.

Human Resources executives can play a role in the strategic planning and practices that help promote this type of job growth. Leadership in the management of human capital is where HR excels. Now, it’s time to look beyond merely replacing employees lost through turnover and think about ways to help your company grow.

Efficiency in Acquisition

Reducing the costs associated with recruiting/onboarding new employees is one area where most HR departments have room for improvement. Investigate ways to speed up workflow in this area. Using a recruiting/onboarding software system that integrates easily with your other HRIS programs and third party vendors is one option.

A well designed onboarding platform (one that incorporates your business rules) can decrease paperwork errors and unnecessary expenses in the staffing and new-hire documentation process. When it costs less to speed an employee into full productivity, there is less reason to delay hiring additional staff.

Partner With Other Leaders

Find out what each department head is looking for in top talent. Most organizations can make an exception to a hiring slow-down if you find someone truly exceptional to fill a much needed role. Get a commitment from executive level management to create at least one new position this month. It should be one that will help move your company toward achieving its long-term goals.

While you are recruiting for this position, you may discover other “must-have” applicants you may be able to find a place for in your organization. Never underestimate your negotiating power. Once you have established a track record for exceptional talent management, your capacity to facilitate corporate growth will increase.

Develop Overall Organizational Health

Provide ongoing training for managers to help them support their employees in reaching their true potential. High morale and increased productivity can spark growth throughout an organization as workers are encouraged to innovate and excel. This may open up new opportunities for expansion/internal promotions that make entry level jobs available to the currently unemployed.

Your HR staff members may have additional ideas for ways to increase job growth. Don’t forget to ask for their input!
