Be an Effective HR Manager for Your Employees

As an HR manager, you are used to being responsible for the wellbeing of pretty much every employee in the workplace. However, sometimes you may be neglecting those closest to you - your HR staff members. Each of your direct reports needs mentoring and support. These individuals are the people you rely on most to help you do your job successfully. They should be able to rely on you as well.
The Best of the Best
People who work in Human Resources are usually held to a higher standard of performance than other employees. They set the example for adherence to rules and impeccable professional conduct in your organization. Everyone in HR deals with confidential information. Your employees have to constantly watch what they say and who they say it to. They deal with a lot of minor complaints from coworkers in other departments and are your first line of defense against being overwhelmed.
Take It Easy
With all the demands placed on your staff, they don’t need additional pressure from you. Use positive reinforcement rather than reprimands to encourage desirable behaviors. Set the example for appropriate ways to let off steam by taking regularly scheduled breaks. Use this time to take a walk, listen to music, or relax and chat in the employee lounge.
Lend an Ear
Find a balance between an open and closed door policy. Set an informal schedule so your staff members know when to bring you their job challenges for discussion. Pick your least busy times of day to prevent disruption of your work flow. For example, you might allocate 20 minute time periods at 11 AM and 4 PM. During these times, your employees can be encouraged to bring you any issues that aren’t exactly urgent but can’t wait until your weekly staff meeting.
Be a Mentor
Your employees have dreams and career goals. The most talented workers you have will not be with you forever. There are lots of opportunities in the HR field; so motivated and ambitious professionals will be looking for advancement. Demonstrate your leadership abilities by supporting your employees in achieving the certification and work experience they need to someday become HR managers themselves.
